you can learn a lot from diaryland members' favorite lists. for instance, i kept seeing people listing "best picture"-winning the apartment as a favorite film, so i finally rented it this week.

considering that it was released in 1960, i was surprised at how unapologetically it addressed extramarital affairs, the troubles of the single working girl/other woman, suicide attempts and office politics. suddenly sex and the city doesn't seem so groundbreaking.

next up on the favorites list discovery circuit is the band sloan. i've just read that they're from halifax and have been together for 10 years. and pete yorn is a fan. who knew?

the cover of their pretty together album tells the story of the music dwelling within. a-boy was telling me once that the strokes' music sounded eerily like songs he remembered hearing on the radio when he was growing it up, but were cognitive dissonantly not. this sloan album is the same deal. it's original music, but it sounds so nostalgic. so early 70s rock and pop on parade. think of it as newstalgia.

the second half of the album is my favorite. it's full of wistful pop songs with clever lyrics like:

"she's young at heart but no teenager
early thirties i would wager
i came along a little later
so i could merely carbon date her"

the songs the great wall and i love a long goodbye are my current favorites. are you giving me back my love? is pretty darn dreamy, too. very the virgin suicides. take a listen here.
