corduroy licorice threw like a girl. he insisted on wearing dresses on the baseball diamond.

today at lunch i did the unthinkable.

i ate two hamburgers.

two!

without blinking! without burping!

i had me a hankering for some red meat.

i've never done anything of the sort, but damn...it was mighty satisfying.

i didn't even feel too full afterwards.

dude...what up wit dat, yo?

then this afternoon at work i was on fire with productivity! i amazed myself with my output. maybe i should be doing the double wimpy whammy every ding dang dingleberry day!

the official nictate top 10 movies list of 2001

this list and the rankings are based on a blend of artistic merit and my unadulterated enjoyment.

#1 the man who wasn't there
this movie blew my mind in the most subtle of ways. it was like talcum powder under an armpit on a dog day of august...quiet, cool and mighty fine. billy bob was a stoic wonder and the black and white imagery was pitch perfect and powerful. the coen brothers continue to rule.

#2 ameli
i'd trumpet my love for this quirky charmer from the top of the eiffel tower. the humor, heart, lustrous cinematography, lovely set design and clever storytelling filled my heart to the rim with caramelly creme brule. jean-pierre jeunet...je t'aime.

#3 moulin rouge
yeah, so i saw it three times in the theater. yeah, so? and i played the soundtrack to a burnt crisp? you wanna make something of it? i'm glad the national board of review gave this wonderful creation the props it deserved. a frothy concoction of saturated colors, catchy music and delightful sets, this movie swept me away despite its feather of a storyline. baz luhrmann made movie magic and should be given a standing ovation.

#4 memento
directed by christopher nolan, this was one of those movies that restores one's faith in the future of filmmaking. it was completely fresh and iconoclastic in its backwards storytelling. while watching the film, i began to feel the same confused state of mind the lead character was experiencing. now that's looc nmad.

#5 bread and tulips
this little italian gem lifted my spirits and put a spring in my step. wonderfully acted. simply adorable. the lead actress licia maglietta was perfecto! grazie to director silvio soldini!

#6 the royal tenenbaums
a quirky dollhouse of a movie that made me chuckle outloud more than a few times. gene hackman was a joy, and the clever little character development devices tickled me pink. i love the way wes anderson and owen wilson see and hear the world. they have been officially added to my "the celebrities i would like to have dinner with" list.

#7 in the mood for love
kar-wai wong painted the screen with jewel-toned watercolors as subtle as the love story he tells. the elegant acting and gorgeous appearances of maggie cheung and tony leung chiu wai were captivating to watch. (talk about a couple of steamed dumplings!) less is so much more in this quiet beauty.

#8 ghost world
director terry zwigoff and writer daniel clowes served up deadpan delight with a side of some serious old school blues tunes. the fish out of water story was never more wryly told and steve buscemi is the most loveable freak in corduroys.

#9 lantana
this rough-around-the-edges film took me completely by surprise. i actually saw it by accident after having being turned off by the story summary i heard on the radio. i'm so glad i made the mistake of seeing it! it is partly a thriller, but mostly a drama which tells the story of timeworn marriages with amazing sensitivity. congratulations to director ray lawrence and andrew bovell who surprised himself with how well his stageplay translated to the screen. anthony lapaglia, barbara hershey, geoffrey rush and kerry armstrong were terrific.

#10 audition
directed by miike takashi, audition is a brilliant, unforgiving horror romance. the lead actress eihi shiina played her challenging role with razor-sharp finesse. oh my, the grisly tapestry that unfolds within. a freaky mind blow that dazzled and frazzled me something serious.
