a friend of mine was telling me that he read the book about the real "horse whisperer" dude, monty roberts. the book is called "the man who listens to horses."

when monty was growing up, he used to capture and "break" wild mustangs with his old-school cowboy dad in a remote part of the united states. spending all that time with horses, monty started to learn about the way the animals communicated with each other. he began to incorporate their behavior into his "breaking" technique. instead of staring down the animal in a challenge, he would stand facing parallel--not making a move. soon an unspoken mutual respect began to develop between monty and the animal. after some practice, he was able to tame the horses in hours instead of days--in a much gentler way.

this idea hit a chord with my friend. he has been struggling with a political situation at work. he described it as feeling like he's tapping on the side of a huge whale, hollering and screaming and trying to pull at the blow hole to get the big beast's attention, but alas, it just keeps moseying along...oblivious.

recently, out of pure frustration, my friend decided to "let go" of the situation and turned away from the conflict. slowly but surely, things began to turn in his favor and now it seems that a possible resolution has finally come into view.

straight from the horse's mouth: sometimes letting go is the best way to get a grip.
