2002-06-26 | 6:00 p.m. corduroy licorice had the midas touch. no one could change a tire faster. *** promo heard on npr today: "for americans serving time in mexican prisons, life can be tough..." get the heck outta town! you gotta be shittin' me! *** this one goes out to prince of wordplay pablo: a line from the classic film gilda, spoken by siren star rita hayworth in reply to a hot and bothered suitor asking her if she's up for some hijinks with him: "didn't you hear about me? if i'd have been a ranch, they would've named me the bar nothing." *** i saw two great movies recently: the dangerous lives of altar boys and hedwig and the angry inch--the former on the big screen the latter on my VCR. the dangerous lives of altar boys reminded me a lot of stand by me in that it focuses on boys dealing with growing pains and growing boredom in a small town. the animation segments cleverly heighten what is going on in their lives. kieran culkin did an amazing, award-deserving acting job--i totally bought that he was a real person. the young actress jena malone also gave a nicely toned performance as a very troubled crush interest. in summary, two spitwads up! hedwig and the angry inch is a heartwrenching, wry stage musical sweetly translated to the big screen that follows the struggles of a transsexual wannabe rock star. the songs--written by stephan trask--range from angry punk to queen-ly melodic rock. john cameron mitchell co-writes (with trask), directs and stars in this completely unique, bittersweet journey of a boy who mends his soul and is made whole through rock 'n' roll. my favorite line from hedwig's childhood recollections: "our apartment was so small, my mother made me play in the oven." the corresponding camera shot is too hilarious for words. oh my gosh, this movie is a oddball delight! |
