corduroy licorice searched to find the golden fleece and discovered it right where he wanted to...lining a corduroy jacket.

so yeah, the oscar nominations.

i was sorry to find that the nictate awards hadn't been more of a prognostication of the oscar picks. on the upside, it was quite heart-expanding to see that moulin rouge got nominated for best picture. for that i'm everlastingly grateful. too bad baz luhrmann didn't get a best director nod, but i guess that would have been asking too much. david lynch took the oddball seat away from him. while i enjoyed mulholland drive, its vintage lynchiness could not compare to the ground-breaking spectacular spectacular luhrmann brewed up. i guess oscar and i will just have to agree to disagree on that one. lynch's nomination was probably more of a career acknowledgement crumb tossing anyway.

and about this arse-kissing gosford park is getting...that's just mind-boggling to me. um, members of the academy, just 'cause a movie features clothing with covered buttons and people with british accents does not make it high art. and in the bedroom was good, but please...don't act like its shit don't stink. its first 3/5ths may rate a nomination, but the back-end don't. true, true, tom wilkinson was quietly terrific and sissy spacek had her moments, but this-is-me-looking-frightened-for-forty-minutes marisa tomei? pa-leze. i haven't seen the lord of the rings yet, so must hold my tongue on that account.

what i can't hold my tongue on is the absense of the man who wasn't there from the best picture nominees. that just ain't jake. these awards are supposed to be about outstanding achievement in motion pictures and i think the coen brothers' creation could kick the other nominees' butts up and down the red carpet on that score. i guess the coens are just gonna be the canadian silver medalist pair skaters of film this year.

as per usual, the academy honors those who portray the "challenged," giving a pat on the head to sean penn for his portrayal of a mentally challenged man and to rene zelwegger as a waif-challenged femme "fat"-ale. both of them did fine jobs, but i don't think either deserves a statuette. it's a bummer zel baby's lip-biting portrayal of a woman living day-to-day with cellulite won the spotlight over the way more deserving naomi watts of mulholland drive. and even worse...billy bob being blown off for his masterful performance in the man who wasn't there. evidently the academy took that film's title a little too literally when compiling the best actor list.

no surprises with a beautiful mind. it might as well have been entitled an oscar-bound mind. i enjoyed that film much more than i expected to, but it's very driving miss daisy, if you know what i mean...and i think you do.

super duper yay-osity for the royal tenenbaums, memento, ameli and ghost world getting writing kudos! damn straight. now you're talking some sense, osc. now you're talking some sense.

the good news is that, nominations aside, 2001 was an amazing year for movies...especially for those that broke fresh ground and weren't afraid to flaunt their quirky personalities. i applaud and thank all the filmmakers who delighted me with their brilliant work. color me awestruck.
