today was trash day, so i had to bring the cans back up from the curb.

it felt good to see that all the gunky trash that had been practically climbing out of the cans with overstuffedness the day before was now cleared away, marking a fresh start for me and my handful of fellow apartment building dwellers.

the cans are color-coded. there are black ones for trash, blue ones for recycling and a green one for yard stuff like leaves, grass, etc.

as i rolled the cans back to their spots, i was thinking how nice it would be to be able to get rid of emotional trash the same way we get rid of empty cans, wadded-up paper towels and greasy pizza boxes.

it would be great to be able to toss bad feelings or thoughts into a color-appropriate bin and roll it all out to the curb for some sturdy-nosed garbage collector to haul away.

there could be a pink can for removing any burdening heartache. a red can to dispose of pointless anger. a green can to toss destructively envious and jealous thoughts into, an orange can for prejudice, a violet can for hatred.

talk about cleansing some auras, yo. plus, the curb would look so colorful with that rainbow of receptacles lined up each week.

there could also be a voice chip installed in each can's lid to issue a little response each time a person threw something away. like, say you wanted to get rid of some anger you'd been harboring. so you go up to the red can, open the lid to toss in your bag'o'stink-eye and you'd hear a pre-recorded voice saying, "good for you! you'd don't need that shit!" and if you were using the pink can to toss some broken heart shards into, it might say, "hang in there! the pieces of your heart that remain are even stronger now!"

i think there's something to this idea, people, but if i hear that npr already covered this story, i'm gonna have to get a grey can to dump my petty competitiveness into. heh.
