hey, guess what? i'm feeling heartened again!

it reminds me of an old saturday night live skit where mike myers is playing a hyper hypoglycemic kid who has to wear a protective helmet. mike is talking to nicole kidman, who is playing a precocious little girl, on the playground. he calls himself a "hyper hypo" and describes how when his mom's car broke down, she fed him three hershey's chocolate bars so that he could single-handedly tow it home. nicole, in turn, brags about how people tell her how pretty and talented she is. my favorite line is when he peers over at her and says wistfully, "wow, you're surrounded by a lot of positive support."

after the responses to my entry yesterday, i feel like nicole kidman...surrounded by a lot of positive support. i had been disheartened yesterday after seeing/hearing love and commitment being dissed in several venues. it was a case of critical mass, alas. but then some fine folks came to the rescue!

i'd like to share how people cheered me, partly to thank them, partly to spread the joy of good people and good thoughts...

hope springs eternal right here in diaryland!

snuffy shared this insightful take on things:

"this backlash in the media against marriage has been around for years - many of my favorite old slapstick films show marriage as this combative state, but this used to be counterbalanced by other examples (nick and nora charles in the "thin man" movies, dysfunctional but loving; the primary characters in "palm beach story", willing to make any sacrifice for each other), and love itself was not disdained so often.

"but we have gotten intensely cynical as a society (something that will probably get worse under 4-8 years of bush, jr.). we have become so immersed in entertainment that we'd rather watch people's relationships fail on "temptation island" than go out and build real relationships ourselves.

"it's a sad, sick little world we live in sometimes, but thankfully, i can look around me and see examples running counter to this cynicism in my daily life - my parents, my roommates, other friends (married and not) who have great loves, the kind that we all used to think we'd get and that kids growing up today are probably coming to think are total fiction."

julie asked me not to be sad and suggested renting a hilarious look at relationships--the john cusack movie "high fidelity"--to cheer up a bit. good advice! good movie!

daysleeper also sent me reassurances and the reminder that there is always the promise of good things ahead, as the sweet entry linked here illustrates.

esol blew me away with his thoughtful take on relationships and commitment. there's a lot of wisdom in there after he shares his humorous ferret-down-the-pants asides. do yourself a favor and visit the love and life guru himself. read to the bottom of the entry linked here and you'll appreciate it from the bottom of your heart.
