i'm kinda disillusioned with dating right now.

or rather, i'm kinda disillusioned with not dating right now.

i had a thought the other day. if i ever get to meet god, i will reach up, take his face in my hands to get his full attention, and say, "WHY?! WHY didn't you leave adam's rib where it WAS?!"

friday night i went to this really cool story-telling evening. i've been going for awhile. it's called spoken interludes. it's usually held at this really cool rattan-filled restaurant. a buffet is served, and then four people read their short stories to the gathered listeners by candlelight. it's a really amazing experience. so serene, so inspiring, so entertaining, so satisfying. sometimes a semi-celebrity, like yeardley smith (the voice of lisa simpson) or julie sweeney ("pat" from snl), will read. (both of them did a delightful job, by the way! and coincidently, both were called on to use french accents in the telling of their tales.)

on friday, spoken interludes was held at the getty museum as part of a series. in honor of an exhibit of works featuring the image of the madonna (the holy mother, not lourdes' mother), all the stories centered around the virgin mary. slides of different images from the exhibit towered above the readers as their shared their words. the first story was performed by jane lynch, who is starring in the hilarious movie "best in show" as one-half of the funniest pair of dog showers in the movie. her story was about losing a virgin mary pendant a nun in her school had given her. it was amazingly touching and funny. she's got a new fan! then the creator of the evening, a lovely actress named delaune michel, read her cleverly told story about how,out of the trinity & co., mary had always been the religious figure who had given her real comfort. she read, "i grew up catholic in southern louisiana. that's how mary and i met." ahaha!

finally, an amazing performance artist, luis alfaro, told a story about a "revolving" virgin mary figure he had as a child. he would plug her into an electrical outlet and she would spin ever-so-slowly, blessing the room.

it was such a delight and honor to hear the stories told. they are broadcasting the programs once a month on the public radio station here. hopefully, npr will pick it up so that it can be enjoyed cross-country.

maybe i'll get up there and read a story one day. i would like that.

quote time:

i've already raved about the new lars von trier movie starring bjork, "dancer in the dark," myself, but thought that oh messy life's andy did a perfect job of describing the experience:

"...it was one of the most innervating films I've ever seen. It was as if someone had slipped wires under the skin of my throat, chest, and stomach, and flooded my body with shocks. I simultaneously felt nauseated and completely clear-headed."

brilliant summation, counselor. if oscar doesn't give it and its director and actress and supporting actress their respective "best" awards, then he needs his shiny little gold head examined.
